Spanish Exercises, Quizzes, Tests
E. L. Easton - Languages - Spanish Exercises, Quizzes, Tests
This site has links to ton of other sites for learning Spanish. Very very slick. For example in the first one I tried - All Spanish -
Test your Spanish level
There is a paragraph with some words missing - in the spot of the missing words you get a list of four words and you pick the correct word. At the end they show you how you did - and this is the neat part - all the corrections are All Spanish.
Wow.

African Oil
http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2005/01/12_400.html
This article about big oil in small african country could have been written 80 years ago with the abuses of colonial powers controlling african natural resources. This is how it is done and few see the wrong. To me a lot like - King Leopold's Ghost - where the King of Belgium himself owend Belgium and wanted riches - natives who failed to bring back enough raw rubber had there hands chopped off. Millions died and only a British shipping clerk in Belgium noticed - the ships going to Congo only carrried guns and ammunition - no rich trade. Where was the wealth of the Congo going if it did improve the lot of the Congolese? This essay is a modern version of the same tale with different wrongs and different "kings" - the oil companies and a dictator of a small country - Equitorial Guina(sp?)

Cigarette butt litter -
"Each year more than 1 billion pieces of litter will accumulate on Texas highways. Of those, 13 percent are cigarette butts. That means 130 million butts will be tossed out in Texas alone this year."
--Texas Department of Transportation
Cigarette Litter
Not only are cigarettes harming smoker and non smoker health but they make a mess of our cities and country - every single roadside trashed with butts!
Again my son nudges me on - "Why haven't you posted about it?" He remembers an incident when he was much younger and we were about to exit our car in a shopping center and the woman in the next car tossed her cigarette out at my feet. Phoom! I picked it up and held it over her lap. "Excuse me. Please tell me you will put this out in an ashtray or I will drop it in your lap." - Her reply was "Are you kidding!" The cigarette was still lit. "Your choice lady." She took it and put it out.
This was cigarette butt tossing rage and I guess it does not happen often enough to change smokers bad habits. And I was very upset.
I notice this horrible littering habit all the time.
I saw a couple enter a COMPUSA the other day - she tossed her lit cigarette and he put his out - and fluffed the tobacco - put the filter in the trash. I was surprised at such a split of behavior. I complimented him on his good behavior and told him he should teach his girlfriend the same method and habit. His reply was interesting - "I was in the Navy!"
Why is that interesting?
The Navy does not tolerate tossing lit cigarettes and cigarrette litter.
Neither should the rest of us!
How can we can make things better? Do we think this is an important matter of discipline as the services (I was taught the same filed stripping procedure in the US Army.)?

Sometimes it helps to be low?
My son Mark is working on an art project using an IBook - Adobe and a Lexmark X85 Ink Jet Multi Purpose printer. All was going good and he got the look he wanted on the output but was running out of in ink - streaks - replacing the cartridges seemed like it would put things back on track - however with the new cartridges in the output did not look the same. Being low on ink was for the look that made them "artisticly" right on for his use!
That intrigued me as he sits with a new dilemma.
My father - a wonderful oil painter - had a saying "Color is an old man's business." Which I took to mean in oil painting it takes a long time to learn to control and understand color - when you do understand and have done your "work" you are old.
That said I want to learn more about color to see if I can help Mark control color even when he is not low on ink.
I have seen and heard about Pantone - so I first wanted to learn what that Pantone meant: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/Pantone_Matching_System_PMS.html
Then the Pantone site itself: http://www.pantone.com/pantone_v1.asp
Which has some links to learn about color.
Some printers are Pantone Matching System compatible(sp?). Like Epson's
